If you’re looking for a leisurely hike instead of a high Alpine tour, the winter trail through the Saas Valley is exactly what you need. Following the cross-country ski trail for the most part, the trail takes around two and a half hours from Saas-Balen to Saas-Almagell or vice versa and offers plenty of Valais charm.
Discover rustic villages in the Saas Valley
The starting point is the village square in Saas-Balen, from where the trail leads towards the Rundkirche and to the first attraction. Built in 1812, the chapel, which is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, is a listed building and its form is unique in Switzerland. To the south towards Saas-Grund, there is a magnificent panorama, while the Fellbach waterfall to the left of the church is also an impressive natural spectacle.
Along the Vispe river in Saas, the trail continues to Bidermatten, Tamatten, Saas-Grund, Unter den Bodmen and finally Saas-Almagell, the southernmost town in the sun-kissed Saas Valley. At Pirmin Zurbriggen’s home, old barns and idyllic corners invite you to linger and explore until you take the Postbus back to Brig or Visp.
It’s the perfect day trip for those who prefer the quiet, enchanting side of winter, and, thanks to its low level of difficulty, is a treat for the whole family.

Sledging
You can enjoy fantastic sledging runs in the Saas-Fee/Saas Valley holiday region! In Saas-Grund you can sledge from Kreuzboden over an incredible 11 kilometres into the village. In Saas-Fee, the 6-kilometre route starts from the Hannigbahn mountain station. The Saas-Almagell sled run takes you along 3 kilometres from Furggstalden to the village. You can rent sledges in all three destinations at the ski lifts.
Winter fox trail in Saas Valley
