On the Raftsmen’s Trail, you will hike in the footsteps of the raftsmen through the picturesque Mettau valley from Laufenburg to Stilli. The hike takes you through an unspoilt landscape with fantastic views.

In the nineteenth century, rafting was an important trade. The raftsmen skilfully routed their timber to Laufenburg via the Aare and Rhine. They returned on foot through the Mettau valley to their starting point. Following in the footsteps of the former raftsmen, you will discover fascinating facts about this almost lost craft on the adventure trail.

The 20 km long route takes around five hours to hike. The hike can be done in both directions and in stages. The trail is marked and well connected to the PostBus stops.

Tip

Get started in Stilli. Postbus route 360 takes you from Brugg (Aargau) conveniently to the Stilli, Aarebrücke stop. From there, follow the brown signposts along the “Raftsmen’s Trail” and hike to Rotberg via Villigen. Once you’ve reached the top, take a seat on the bench and enjoy the view over the Aare valley. The trail descends along the vineyard to Hottwil. The “Gasthaus zum Bären” is still there today as it was 200 years ago; you too can stop here for a bite to eat. After reaching Wil, head upwards to the campsite, where you can enjoy a magical view of the surrounding Jura hills. In Mettau, you can hop on the Postbus and return to Brugg or continue your journey to Laufenburg.
