Passenger record for PostBus: in 2024, 183 million people used the 2,300 Postbuses as a means of transport. That equates to half a million passengers per day. Other causes for celebration in 2024 included bringing additional electric vehicles into service and marking the 100th anniversary of the post horn.
Last year, Postbuses travelled around the globe 3,500 times – that’s nearly ten orbits around the Earth per day. They covered a total distance of 140 million kilometres (2023: 136 million). The route network is 17,689 kilometres long (18,322). There was a significant increase in usage, which reached a record high: 183 million passengers travelled by Postbus, which is 4.9 percent more than in the previous year. Demand increased the most in the leisure sector. Throughout Switzerland, the Postbuses operated on 950 lines (969) and served 11,339 stops. PostBus employs 3,438 staff (3,264) in 2,937 full-time positions (2,784). Passengers rated quality of service consistently, at 78 out of 100 points.

Electrification of the fleet continues

At the end of 2024, 42 of the 2,300 or so Postbuses were fully electric. Together, they covered almost 2 million kilometres emission-free. One third of all e-Postbuses were used on routes in Graubünden – in the Bündner Herrschaft and Surselva. In 2025, the largest networks with electric Postbuses are emerging in Western Switzerland, with around 30 e-Postbuses operating in Sion, Moudon and Gland. Fleets with several new e-Postbuses will also be launched this year in the Zurich Transport Network, Gelterkinden, Interlaken, Wildhaus and Bellinzona. PostBus will convert its entire fleet to electric drive technology by 2035.

100 years of the post horn – an anniversary with great resonance

The post horn has been in use since 1924. PostBus celebrated this landmark anniversary in 2024 with various high-profile initiatives. One highlight was the horn initiative on 17 July, when all drivers of Postbuses equipped with a three-tone horn sounded their horns in unison. The fact that this renowned PostBus audio trademark is part of Swiss cultural heritage became clear in the public competitions. 500 children from all over the country took part with their colourful drawings, and numerous adults sent PostBus their Du-Da-Do-inspired creations. There were several hundred media reports about Switzerland’s most famous three-tone horn. A little patience is required until the next national anniversary, when PostBus turns 125 in 2031.
