As of this winter season, residents and holidaymakers in the Saas Valley can benefit from a climate-friendly public transport service, a fuller timetable and greater convenience along Postbus and ski bus routes. This is thanks to the expanded bus concept in the Saas Valley and four new electric Postbuses. A total of six battery-powered buses now ensure that passengers can travel by fossil fuel-free transport in the Saas-Fee/Saas Valley holiday region.
Improvements in the Saas Valley
In the Saas Valley, the Saas-Almagell–Saas-Grund Postbus route started running to the Hohsaas mountain railway valley station after the timetable change in December 2023. On the Bidermatten–Saas-Fee and Saas-Almagell–Saas-Fee routes, the new timetable concept came into effect on the same date and will operate until the end of the season on 21 April 2024. The four new electric Postbuses run every 15 minutes. As the departure times are staggered, the attractive service now provides connections between Saas-Grund, Post and Saas-Fee, Alpin Express every 7.5 minutes. In Saas-Fee, the buses now run all the way to the valley station for the Alpin Express. This offers a major advantage: winter sports enthusiasts no longer have to change at the bus terminal.
To enable the new bus concept, new turning areas have been constructed at the Saas-Fee, Parkplatz Nord bus stop and at the Alpin Express. The road by the swimming pool in Saas-Fee has also been widened.
The service in Saas-Fee
The expansion of the public transport service in the Saas Valley is supplemented by local transport in Saas-Fee, with four routes operating within the village. In addition, the new Saas-Fee, Parkplatz Nord–Busterminal–Alpin Express e-bus route has been running at 20-minute intervals since the timetable change in December 2023. Passengers can use the service free of charge between Saas-Fee, Parkplatz Nord or Saas-Fee, Parkhaus and the Saas-Fee, Alpin Express stop.
Improvements along the routes
For public transport customers, there are also improvements to the infrastructure:
- At the bus terminal in Saas-Fee, a new ramp ensures easy access to the Postbus. This will benefit people who use wheelchairs and families with pushchairs. The old lockers in the bus terminal have been replaced with new ones.
- In the Saas Valley, all bus shelters have now been given a standardized design.
- At the Saas-Grund, Post stop, a new canopy provides protection against the weather all year round.
Implementation of the new bus concept and other measures was enabled by the constructive cooperation between the Saas municipalities, PostBus, the cantons, the two mountain railway companies and the tourist organization. At a press conference in Saas-Fee, representatives from PostBus, the municipality of Saas-Fee and Saastal Tourismus AG presented an electric Postbus and discussed the attractive timetable concept.
Service during the summer season
In summer, the electric buses travel from Saas-Fee to Mattmark. During peak season, they will also support the existing Postbuses on the Saas-Grund route as far as Mattmark.
Off-season, the electric vehicles will operate on the Saas-Grund–Saas-Almagell route (513). One electric vehicle will travel on the Brig–Visp (621) and 12.632 Brig–Ried-Brig–Termen (632) routes outside the winter season.
On this route, you will also enjoy the three-tone horn, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.
