PostBus has offered summer journeys in the Central Alps for 103 years. From June to October, around 20 drivers and seven vehicles operate on the mountain passes of varying lengths. The season lasts until the 6th October 2024. The following multi-pass journeys are on offer:

  • The three-pass routes start in the morning or afternoon in Meiringen, Andermatt or Airolo. They transport passengers over either the Furka, the Grimsel and the Susten or the Gotthard, the Nufenen and the Furka.
  • The four-pass route begins in Meiringen in the morning. The Postbus travels over the Grimsel, Nufenen, Gotthard and Susten Passes, climbing more than 10,000 metres in altitude and crossing four cantonal borders. It is the most legendary Postbus multi-pass journey in the Central Alps. Taking 8 hours and 46 minutes, it is the longest direct public transport connection in Switzerland. It sets out at 9.25 a.m. from Meiringen station and ends there again at 6.11 p.m.

Additional bicycle transport capacities

The passes are popular with day-trippers and hikers, and increasingly also with cyclists. PostBus is responding to this trend and now offers extra capacity for bicycle transport on 11 daily routes. Cyclists can make a reservation the day before and be sure that there really is room for their bikes. Based on the reservations, PostBus fits bicycle trailers if necessary.

Additional route on the Grimsel Pass route

Also new this season is an additional morning service on the Grimsel Pass route, which runs from Innertkirchen to the Grimsel Pass. In this way, PostBus is creating an attractive connection for hikers and meeting the high demand on this route. Early risers can head off at 6 a.m. in Bern and reach the top of the pass before 9 a.m. The new journey offers a connection to and from Oberwald from the top of the Grimsel Pass.

With 151,000 passengers transported, 2018 is the record year to date; last year, there were 142,000 passengers. The five different routes over the Grimsel and Furka (since 1921), Gotthard (since 1922), Susten (since 1946) and Nufenen (since 1998) passes make up the iconic summer public transport tourism routes in Switzerland. The three-tone horn, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, can be heard regularly on these journeys.
