175 million passengers – new all-time record
Never in its history, spanning more than a century, has PostBus ever transported as many people as it did last year. Around 175 million passengers travelled with the traditional Swiss company in 2023. This was 7 million higher than the previous record, set in 2019. Development has also picked up speed in the field of electromobility – over 25 of the Postbuses on the roads are already equipped with an electric drive system.

As a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic, demand for PostBus dropped to 127 million passengers in the year 2020. Thankfully, however, this downward trend stopped quickly: by the end of 2022, demand had already largely recovered to pre-pandemic levels with 156 million passengers. And now, PostBus has the pleasure of announcing a new all-time record. Never in its history, spanning more than a century, has PostBus ever brought as many people to their destination as this year: around 175 million passengers climbed aboard a Postbus in the year 2023!
Service overview 2023
Over the course of 2023, the 2,317 vehicles covered a total of 136 million kilometres on scheduled services – an increase of 2.3 million compared to the previous year
(133.7 million). Postbuses ran every day of the year on 969 lines with a network length of 18,322 kilometres, serving 11,086 stops. The fleet has an average age of 6.8 years and now includes 84 environmentally friendly vehicles with electric or diesel hybrid drives.
At the end of last year, PostBus had 3,264 employees (2022: 3,141) – this corresponds to 2,784 full-time positions (2022: 2,673). Passengers scored the committed work and high service quality of the company at 78 out of 100 points. PostBus is delighted with this very good score.
Right of way for electromobility
Electrification of the fleet is going ahead at full throttle and PostBus is increasingly taking on a leading role in the transformation of public transport on the road towards environmentally friendly drive systems. Particularly noteworthy is the first use of eleven electric Postbuses in the canton of Graubünden. These clearly demonstrate that electromobility can be implemented successfully even in mountainous regions. These environmentally friendly and quiet vehicles are hugely popular with both passengers and drivers. PostBus is underscoring its commitment to a sustainable future with the ambitious goal of switching a total of 100 Postbuses to electronic drive systems by the end of 2024 – and over 1,000 Postbuses by 2030.
On-demand to the workplace
Reliable, sustainable public transport – wherever and whenever it’s needed. With on-demand services, Postbuses pick people up from wherever they are and transport them wherever they want to go. PostBus has over 25 years of experience in on-demand transport and has implemented many successful projects. One of the latest projects is the Engehalde shuttle in Bern. It transports PostBus and PostFinance employees between the train station and the workplace. Not only that – In Appenzell, Thusis and Vaud, the on-demand solution PubliCar is already part of the regular public transport service.
